Havana Rakatan
Peacock Theatre
Thursday 4 February - Saturday 6 March
Tickets: £15 - £40
Tickets 0844 8710091 www.sadlerswells.com
Tickets are now on sale for red hot Cuban show Havana Rakatan, which returns to London for a fourth season by popular demand from 4 February - 6 March 2010. One of Sadler's Wells' most successful productions, Havana Rakatan was originally the dream of Cuban choreographer Nilda Guerra and has toured around the world, enjoying a critically acclaimed Australian debut tour in 2009.
Salsa, mambo, jazz, bolero, cha-cha-cha and rumba all come alive with son music courtesy of eight-piece band Turquino. The show frequently has audiences dancing in the aisles, and with free post-show salsa lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays this is a chance to experience the authentic heart and soul of Havana - right here in London!
"Rip-roaring entertainment. Expectations were fulfilled to the point of a full-throated standing ovation" Time Out
"The hottest, the coolest, the sexiest dancers in town. Irresistible" Sunday Express

Rumberos @ the Wardrobe, Leeds
Now.. I've not been there, yet... but I have heard talk of this place as being one of the best places in the North of England to go salsa dancing. So I'm going to give it a go on the Friday 20th November and see for myself just what all the talk is about.
Events are helds once a month at the Wardrobe Restaurant and Bar in Leeds near the BBC and are hosted by a group calling themselves Rumberos. They don't seem to have a website themselves (big mistake) but you can get to the event details through http://www.thewardrobe.co.uk/ and then click on the relevant Friday night date for details. We have choosen the 20th for two reasons:-
1. We are not going to GBSex this year because as brilliant as it was last year we have decided to try out the competition with Havana Nights at Bodelwyddan Castle Hotel in Wales the following weekend. Being a hardcore salsera that I am my partner thinks that two weekender congresses on the trot would probably finish him off (light weight!) and:
2. Nicolai of Fuego Latino is the guest teacher that night and as we loved our classes with him in Malaga in January we thought we'd go and say hello again.
In addition to this the Rumberos are putting on a screening of the file OUR LATIN THING' ('La Cosa Nuestra') - the legendary 1971 film on salsa and Latino life in New York at 7pm with the social dancing following on after from 9.45.
Music provided by DJ Lubi and all of the above for under £10 sound good to me! Watch this space to see how it goes.
SALSA KINGDOM Southport only 2 weeks away!
Not long to go now, still time to get your ticket. I did this one last year,
the first Salsa Kingdom at Camelot at Charnock Richard, and loved it.
I did make one mistake however, as it was only a 40-minute drive from home I decided to travel there and back each day. Big mistake! I was shattered. With a party each of the three nights till 4.00am (yes I did stay till the end of each one, told you, hard core salsa dancer here) and lessons all day from 10.00am each morning you really do need to be staying close by. Not only for the sleep factor but also for the convenience of showers and changing facilities. So get your ticket booked and find a hotel close by.
Now this year it's at Southport and the action is spread over a number of venues. SOUTHPORT THEATRE - FLORAL HALL - ARTS CENTRE - PRINCE OF WALES HOTEL are all in use over this three-day salsa weekender. Now this could be a problem. As we found out at the Bournemouth Cuban Salsa Congress a few weeks ago, split venues for lessons mean that you a dashing about like a fox chased by the hounds to get to the next workshop, and often by Sunday your liable to say 'Sod it, I'm just gonna sit in the sunshine for half an hour and chill'. But with teachers like Maria Torres, Tito and Tamara, Susana Montero, Chachi, Jhesus Aponte, Mauricio Reyes, Leon Rose, Mo Flex, and Irene Miguel to name but a few, you will not want to miss a single class.
Now I left out somebody on that list and these two were the highlight of the weekend for me last year and deserve a special mention. Adrian and Anita from Spain gave the most fabulous performance in the two evening shows. They are the Spanish and World Champions and boy can they salsa dance!! An absolute must see.
Lessons will be from beginner level right through to advanced and will cover salsa, bachata, cha cha cha, hustle, son, reggaeton, afro-cuban and bomba, (I've no idea what that is but I will let you know) and Latin jazz. And with classes in musicality, styling and spinning technics you will improve you dance level in just 3 days.
Anyhow I am off to plan my wardrobe and make sure I have the right knickers washed for the dresses I want to wear. So go to http://www.salsakingdom.co.uk/ book your tickets and we will see you there.
